100 days of happiness-Day2

I am happy for the wonderful collaboration I had today with my new co-teachers!  My math teacher asked me to get the class started with the warm-up.  I also planned and shared ideas with my language arts co-teacher and planned our lessons for next week!

Getting it done!  yay!

100 days of Happiness-Day 1

I have accepted to take the 100 Days of Happiness Challenge!  I feel like this is a great way to start (beginning of the school year) and I plan to post my happiness everyday on my blog!

Here is the link to the website to get inspired and get started!  http://100happydays.com/

Today we introduced our social justice topic to our students by explaining what social justice is and then reading the book, "14 Cows For America"  It a beautiful book inside and out.  The students listened well and made some connections during our discussion after reading the book.  This leads me to my happiness today.  I also have more below:

-teaching my own resource class (math and language arts)
-going to the dentist and being told that I have great teeth
-Getting ahead on my lesson planning for next week!

Day 1-social justice

I've just finished the first day of school and found that my 8th graders are more grown up and seem eager to learn more.  I am very excited to get the year started!

My co teacher, Rachel is amazing and has introduced me to the topic of social justice and teaching it within the classroom.  Two years ago we had a wonderful group of kids who were motivated to help different organizations and really showed their passion for what they cared about.
If you aren't quite sure what I mean by social justice, please go on and read Rachel's blog. She clearly states and defines it so well. She says, "a social justice superhero is someone who wants to make the world a better place.  This can mean someone who dedicates their entire life to creating worldwide change, but it can also be someone who lives their life meaningfully.  Someone who recognizes that they have a voice and a choice when it comes to doing the right thing.

We are going to ask our new 8th graders who has been someone influential in their life similarly to Elissa and other upstanders.
One person in my life that has always shown me to be patient and accept others is my boyfriend, Shpend.  He sees the world so differently from me.  He lived in Kosovo until he was 13 and then moved here because of the war.  He went through a lot but found ways to stay positive and to care for others.  Shpend makes me more grateful for the childhood I had, the lifestyle I live now, and opens my eyes to everything around me.

It's starting....

School is about to start...and I was informed that I will be teaching two self-contained classes this year!  I will have three co-taught classes (Lit Studies, Language Arts, and Math) and then a self-contained Math and a self contained Language Arts.

I am truly excited to have my own classes where I can work with students at a slower pace, meet their needs, and form a community in which they feel confident academically.  In my district, our numbers of special ed students are growing.
This year, I still have a small number of students on my caseload, unless I get any new students transferring over.  I am excited to see what Summer has done to them.  The time between 7th and 8th grade is truly magical.  They change so much and come back to school ready and mature (most of them).

I will be starting to share great resources soon and can't wait to set up my classroom!  I learned about Dan Meyers at a math conference recently and found this website with great videos!  He has these 30-40 second videos that let the students think more conceptually about math!  Check it out!
